Oh dear, I went and wrote a book.
I guess I can stop saying I never finish anything. I started this project five years ago in a writing workshop. The leader of said workshop has been after me to put this together ever since.
I’m so grateful to Shaun Levin for his encouragement and expertise.
What’s it about?
It’s about yoga, but not about yoga. It’s about starting over and trying to be present (and content with) where you are.
It’s about getting on the mat and practicing the Sun Salute, whether at home, on a Barcelona beach, in a park in Cadiz, or a gym in Provincetown.
What are people saying?
Salute is about giving ourselves permission to fail and to start over. it’s a reminder to live in the moment, to accept and appreciate what we have in the now.
In that sense, it reminds me of Natalie Goldberg’s, Writing Down The Bones or What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami in which writing and running practice become metaphors for any number of other expressive practices, and how those practices teach us about life.
‘We are a part of everything,’ Goldberg says. Murakami says, ‘You make do with what you have. As you age you learn even to be happy with what you have.’ Bob Merckel says, ‘There is no perfect.’
Salute reassures me that the imperfections I see in myself are only stepping stones to ‘doing it better’. That I can always choose to be at the beginning of something, and stand in the light.
